Side Table SOLVE ET COAGULA

SOLVE ET COAGULA is an investigation of Murano’s blown glass from a holistic point of view. A collaboration with Murano’s glass community, the research and design play with the archetypes of the tradition to speculate about new possibilities for the material. The collection aims to celebrate the impurities in re-melted glass waste, as well as exalting fluid and irregular forms.

Half of Murano’s glass production becomes waste, around 700 to 1000 tons each year. Called Cotisso by Murano’s artisans, SOLVE ET COAGULA encourages to look at Cotisso as a resource. The collection is made of a mix of glass waste and regular glass.

Alchemists believed in the transformation from vile elements into noble ones, both physically and spiritually, through a process of dissolution and coagulation. The Alchemical motto Solve Et Coagula literally means “dissolve and coagulate”. It suggests that nothing can be created before breaking something else, just like glass can be broken into pieces and remelted, in a loop that regenerates itself.

SOLVE ET COAGULA got a special mention in Ro Plastic Prize 2021, in the category of Responsible Innovation Projects.
