Wonmin Park

Wonmin Park was born in Seoul, South Korea in 1982. He studied at the Design Academy Eindhoven, graduating in 2011. In his final year as a student, he also interned both for Aldo Bakker’s design firm and Studio Jurgen Bey, before opening his eponymous studio in The Netherlands. Park’s work is characterized by a sense of lightness and purity. Notable projects include: the Haze Furniture Series (2012), constructed of pigment-colored resin slabs in simple geometric shapes, which seem simultaneously substantial and insubstantial; as well as White Paper Classification (2012), a delicate maple table inspired by the overlap of two pieces of paper. Wonmin Park’s furniture acts like sculpture, in that it demands to be looked at and visually appreciated. To maximize the visual appeal of his pieces, Park uses resin, a material that is not highly suitable for practical items such as furniture. Although Park’s furniture also stimulates our sense of touch, it functions more directly as a visual symbol, reminiscent of an abstract painting. His design furniture demands equal consideration as both practical commodity and fine art.
