Gráinne Watts
Gráinne Watts is a ceramic artist, based at The Clay Studios, Bennetsbridge , Co Kilkenny.
She creates sculptural and vessel forms, using smooth stoneware clay, and sometimes, Ming Porcelain, for smaller forms. Throwing and hand building techniques are mainly used in her creative practice. Decorative processes involve the application of multiple layers of Velvet under glazes, applied with brushes to create the complex optical surface detail.
Her current body of work explores various forms and colour combinations, found in the Natural world. Organic geometry and patterns inspire the surfaces she create, which become integral to the forms.
She tends to work in series, exploring variations on a theme and as a continuous search for resolution to an original idea. This approach allows for new directions and solutions to evolve in the development of forms and surface decoration.
There is a physical rhythm to the rituals and processes of making and decorating that feeds something in her creative soul.
