Old Lampshade Ball Light

Piet Hein Eek

The old lampshades lamp is inspired by Jeanine’s habit of collecting. She has collections of almost everything, including lampshades. When we visited Leo Coolen’s warehouses (of sprookjes.eu) and saw his collection of lampshades, we encountered the superlative level of collecting. I wanted to use the shades, preferably the least special, to make a new lamp. Collecting means organising and ranking, so lots of these shades had to be combined in a large object: a chandelier. A large globe formed from lots of smaller ones seemed like a good idea. But in order to make a globe, the shades have to hang above each other. It is not normally possible to hang one lampshade beneath another. I devised a ring, consisting of two parts that are attached by means of a connector block at the top and bottom. An old lampshade hangs in the ring. The positive and negative flow through the separate parts of the ring. Another ring can be mounted below this. And thus it becomes possible to make the structures.
