Margarita Rangelova

Piece of Culture

Natural materials such as cotton and wool are knitted into intricate textile patterns, which are then encased in porcelain and fired at high temperatures. During the firing process, the textiles dissipate, leaving behind delicate imprints in the porcelain that capture the essence of the original fibers. These imprints act as preserved stories, a silent yet tactile memory of the textile’s presence, creating a bridge between the fleeting nature of fabric and the permanence of ceramic.
The Bulgarian tradition of “Shevitsa” represents a significant cultural artefact, characterised by its embroidery techniques that have been preserved and passed down through generations. The embroidery patterns encoded within are rich with symbolism, often linked to beliefs of individuals within the community, particularly reflecting the roles and perceptions of women. As a cultural practice, Shevitsa embodies a form of non-verbal communication that provides insight into the historical and cultural evolution of Bulgaria.
