Souvenir d’Italie

ANOTHERVIEW

Tourism has long been intertwined with Italy, and especially with the Costiera Amalfitana. Yet the passage of visitors has not always been without consequence. Among the most common—and least appreciated—habits of certain travelers is the urge to inscribe their presence on walls, doors, monuments, and even rocks. These marks, often little more than names or dates, are attempts to leave a trace of one’s existence upon places far more significant than the fleeting moment of their visit. In seeking a form of symbolic immortality, they imprint themselves upon fragments of our shared historical and cultural heritage. What makes this gesture particularly problematic is that it is uninvited. With the Vandal Collection, the premise shifts entirely. Instead of rejecting the intervention of strangers, Anotherview actively invites passersby and unknown participants to contribute to the creation of an artwork—transforming an act usually perceived as vandalism into an intentional process of collective and participatory creativity. At the beginning of the event, the installation presents itself with disarming simplicity: a classic and banal white door opening onto the breathtaking view of the famous beach of Furore on the Amalfi Coast, filmed from the window of the house that once belonged to the renowned actress Anna Magnani. Suspended from the structure by a long thread hangs a single felt-tip pen, accompanied by a brief yet provocative invitation: “You Are Invited to Vandalize the white Surface” Over the course of the event—typically lasting about a week—the door gradually becomes covered with drawings, signatures, and messages. What begins as a pristine, almost banal surface evolves into a dense tapestry of marks made by countless hands. In this context, graffiti ceases to be an act of damage or aggression. Instead, it becomes a shared creative gesture, the final stage in the life of the piece—an artwork authored not by a single hand, but by a spontaneous community of participants.
