The Handfolded Lamp Series results from Piet Hein Eek’s renewed interest in punching machines. A punching machine is an old-fashioned tool that has progressively fallen out of use due to its considerable limitations. During the design process, Piet recovered this technology and discovered that the punching machine works best when it creates simple shapes. This discovery allowed him to develop a series of lamps in a cost-efficient way. Controlled by a computer, this machine punches the shape of the chosen design in the sheet.
