Marre Moerel

These artifacts were inspired by Moerel’s childhood during which she up in and around an architect’s environment; they reflect her love for minimalist, simple yet cozy, architectural spaces, where light and shadow play a primary role. Moerel’s main concept was to create a large variety of sculptures, consisting of building blocks, ie modules, which can be played with and combined in an infinite amount of configurations, to create one’s own landscape. The modules, made of untreated, earthenware ceramic, mimic asymmetrical building constructions/apartment blocks and their (often) raw material finishes. Their illuminations indicate the presence of human life within these structures. The outcome of the work is 2 different series: the first series is a variety of individual modules of different sizes and shapes, which can be placed to create one’s own composition. Each module lights up and is operated by a rechargeable battery to allow for free movement and independent placement. The second series is one where the modules are already fixed together; to create a whole previously conceived sculpture. These are wired with a standard components and electric cable to allow for indefinite operating time.
