The smoker chair
For this new series of Sculpt Chairs, developed for Milan Design Week 2026, the work moves away from resolution and toward continuous transformation. Where earlier pieces sought to reconcile sculpture and function, these chairs resist closure, existing in a state where structure, surface, and gesture remain in flux. Each chair begins with a steel armature that suggests stability and utility, yet this framework is overtaken by a fluid, marbleized material. Built up, eroded, and reworked by hand, the surface allows chance, gravity, and time to act as collaborators. The material, derived from solidified liquid pigment, retains a memory of its origin, carrying traces of movement and decision within its layers. Rather than directly referencing historical techniques, the work absorbs and transforms them. What emerges is a tension between control and surrender, precision and erosion, object and environment. Function remains present, but no longer dominant. Sitting becomes an encounter. The body engages with a structure that subtly alters perception of balance, sound, and space. The chair does not simply support, it frames an experience. Presented outdoors, the works are exposed to weather and light, allowing their appearance to shift over time. What is shown during Milan Design Week is not a final state, but a moment within an ongoing process.
