Idoia Cuesta
Idoia Cuesta is a designer, craft practitioner, and researcher working in textiles, with a particular focus on basketry techniques. She lives and works in rural Galicia, within the Terras do Miño Biosphere Reserve—an environment that directly informs both her practice and her understanding of design. The surrounding landscape, vegetation, and natural cycles are not only a continuous source of inspiration, but also an active component of her process, grounding her work in its specific territory. Her practice unfolds through the development of her own collections, in which traditional natural fibers—such as willow, chestnut, and wool—are combined with other materials to produce pieces that sit between functionality and sculptural expression. Rooted in traditional crafts, her work is reinterpreted through a contemporary lens, driven by an ongoing exploration of techniques, processes, and materials. This line of research results in a body of work with a distinct identity within contemporary design, expanding its applications, forms, and scales. Alongside her independent practice, she collaborates with brands, designers, and publishers, contributing her perspective to projects across product design, interior design, architecture, and fashion. These collaborations extend the reach of her work while placing it in dialogue with other fields of contemporary practice. For Idoia, contemporary craft constitutes a living field of inquiry—one that embraces innovation while remaining deeply connected to material knowledge and place.
