Babel Tower

Hillsideout

Built with several handcrafted woods and transparent plexiglass, the Babel Tower is an interesting bookcase by Hillsideout. It features five wooden shelves linked by a central column. Four table legs from the 19th century and plexiglass make up the centerpiece. This design permits each book to function as a bookend for another book. Books can be taken easily through spinning the bearing structure. The bookcase rests on 6 wheels; therefore it is rotatable.

This bookcase finds its inspiration in the famous story of the Tower of Babel. The Biblical myth talks about a tower tall enough to reach heaven and the creation of different languages. The blackboard stripes allow to personalize the bookcase not only with books, but also with personal writings. They can be used to chalk up personal thoughts, phrases or letters, which can be removed and changed easily. The association with the Tower of Babel can also be found on the top, where a plexiglass element functions as a symbolic opening towards the sky.
