“A Flip Flop Story” is a collection of sustainable objects. With this series, Diederik Schneemann demonstrates that waste can be something extraordinary.

All over the world people wear, tear, patch up and finally toss away flip flops. After a long trip through Asia or Africa, they end up in sewers and in the ocean. Eventually, flip flops appear on the shores of Eastern Africa, where they are found, collected and reclaimed.

Diederik Schneemann captures and translates these eventful travel tales, giving discarded flip flops a new purpose. The designer collaborates with Ocean Sole Afrika, a social enterprise based in Nairobi. Through the collection of discarded flip-flops and direct employment, they provide steady income to nearly 100 low-income Kenyans.
