Piet Hein Eek
Piet Hein Eek, born on April 29, 1967, in Purmerend, Netherlands, is a Dutch designer best known for his innovative approach to design and craftsmanship. Eek studied at the Academy for Industrial Design in Eindhoven, now known as Design Academy Eindhoven, where he graduated in 1990. He gained significant attention with his graduation project, the Classic Cabinet in Scrapwood, which laid the foundation for his signature style. Eek’s work is characterized by the use of reclaimed materials, particularly scrapwood, and a commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly design practices. His creations often showcase a raw, unfinished aesthetic that emphasizes the beauty of imperfections and the history embedded in the materials. In 1992, Piet Hein Eek founded his own design studio in Geldrop together with his friend Nob Ruijgrok, and later relocated to an old Philips factory in Eindhoven. This space not only serves as his workshop and studio but also houses a showroom, a shop, two restaurants, a hotel with rooftop bar, a fry shop, art gallery and several design studios, creating a vibrant hub for design and creativity. Eek’s portfolio spans a wide range of products, from furniture and lighting to architectural projects and full custom interiors. He has collaborated with various brands and designers, and his work is exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide. His approach to design challenges conventional notions of beauty and value, promoting a philosophy of creating with what the world has to offer. Throughout his career, Piet Hein Eek has remained dedicated to handcraftsmanship and the integrity of materials, making him a prominent figure in contemporary design and a pioneer in sustainable design practices.
